The great Helen Mirren delivers a top-notch performance
along with new-comer Manish Dayal in this wonderful movie. The movie starts slowly describing an Indian
family’s struggles to get by after losing everything they owned including their
mother in a fire in India. They go to
Europe in an attempt to start over.
While driving through the country-side in France, they
lose the brakes on their van. Fixing the
van will require an overnight stay. The
father of the family (Om Puri) goes for a walk and discovers an abandoned
building that is for sale. He decides
that this is where they should make their new beginning. This building just happens to be across the
street from a well-liked up-scale local restaurant owned by Madame Mallory who
was played by Helen Mirren. She attempts
to sabotage any success that the new Indian restaurant may have.
This movie goes on to show the growing companionship
between Madame Mallory and the father as well as Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal)
and Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) who works at the up-scale restaurant. Hundred-Foot Journey was produced by Steven
Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey and it delivered.
I gave this movie 3 ½ out of 4 stars.
